Squash Zone Member’s Handicap Tournament

Squash Zone Member’s Handicap Tournament

32 players of California’s finest descended to Squash Zone’s courts on Saturday 1st December at 1p.m.

The concept of the tournament – each player has a handicap of + or – points related to their rating and played 1 game to 15 points – was new to most but our erstwhile players soon got the hang of it! All were welcome, newcomers and seasoned warriors alike. The top seeds were put to the test in the early rounds with unforced errors being the undoing of some of our more experienced members. A standout was 10 year old James Yan nearly taking out one of eventual finalist Andy Michael who just edged out the game 15-14 in the 5th!

We had main, consolation and plate rounds with all competitors coming away with 3 matches and a very fashionable Ligeti Open t-shirt courtesy of Norcal and Kiersten Ligeti of Alain Pinel realtors. Our Plate final was contested between Joel Berger and Adam Stein with Joel pipping Adam at the final post. In the Consolation final it was youth versus experience with junior member Aadi Chaudra putting huge effort into stopping the onslaught from Aharon Weiner. Weiner prevailed but not without feeling the pressure from the ever improving Chaudra. In the main event, Kevin Sacherman came up against Andy Michael whose words to Sacherman ‘Do you know I used to play your father?’ must have given Sacherman an early psychological edge as he stormed to a convincing victory taking home the trophy (a box of chocolates) and immense honour!

This was a fun event and the Squash Zone team really enjoyed hosting the players, first of many to come!
